Smile By Design Art Gallery Dental Gallery General Info Why Our Office Directions Home

Smiles are like snowflakes. No two are exactly alike. Each person's smile needs to be individualized to fit the pesons face. Smile Design is a meld of art and science that is not taught in dental schools. The dentist must pursue additional training to apply principles that actually measure the size, length, width, shape, color and spacing of the teeth. The gum tissue, lip line, facial shape, sex, age, and other physical traits must also be considered. Unique details need to be developed in the smile according to these characteristics. Designing a smile is a highly technical process that involves artistically blending these features into a person's wants and desires.

Our office takes additional steps to customize your new smile. This may involve one or more short appointments to fine tune the design of your new smile. We value your input and explain each step of your treatment to avoid unexpected results and "cookie cutter" smiles. It's not just about white teeth, or straight teeth. It's about having a beautiful, natural looking smile that politely brings out your best features. The result is a more youthful appearance that will make your self-confidence soar. A beautiful smile can open doors and knock down barriers, and you really never do get a second chance to make a first impression.

THE VENEER PROCESS

The initial consultation appointment is planned to address inquiries regarding cosmetic procedures that can enhance the appearance of your teeth. Shape, shade and specific corrections are usual topics of discussion.

Impressions are taken of the upper and lower teeth. These models are sent to our ceramist who will consult with Dr. Skomsky regarding a smile/tooth design that is best suited for you. Dr. Skomsky will fabricate a wax-up for your review at the second consultation. Pertinent questions and concerns are a high priority in achieving patient satisfaction. If you are ready to begin this very exciting process with us, pre-procedure photographs are taken. We ask that you sign a photo release. Dr. Skomsky periodically presents cases for lectures to colleagues, for teaching purposes, and for publications to illustrate cosmetic dentistry.

The preparation appointment will be approximately 3 to 3 1/2 hours in length. Your comfort is a primary concern. Appropriate anesthetic will be given; nitrous oxide is available per patient request. The major portion of time is dedicated to creating the temporary veneers -- a kind of smile sculpture that allows us to choose the final result. We believe that free-flowing communication produces the best avenue for a shared success in your final result. Please address any questions or concerns at anytime during the temporary phase of the process.

There is usually a three-week interval between the preparation and placement appointments. During this time, we will be in touch to inquire about your well being and comfort. Your feedback is encouraged and appreciated. Occasionally, patients have a need to return between these appointments for minor adjustments or discussion. This is considered a normal situation and part of the total process.

The placement appointment is similar in duration as the preparation period. Again, your comfort is a prime consideration. For females, it is recommended that you refrain from wearing lipstick to this appointment. The temporary veneers will be removed and the teeth are cleaned with a non-fluoridated polish. Next, the porcelain veneers are placed with a „try-in gel. Dr. Skomsky will assess the appearance and request your approval. Placing the veneers is a time-consuming procedure because it requires working in a dry-environment with light-activated cement. Following the permanent placement, the veneers are cleaned and polished, any necessary adjustments are made, and a final polish.

We do ask and appreciate a return visit after the veneers are placed. Dr. Skomsky recommends a post-procedure evaluation and photographs (gum tissue has returned to normal status by this time). No charge is incurred for this visit, as it is part of the total veneer process. No anesthetic is required -- JUST A BEAUTIFUL SMILE THAT WE HAVE CREATED TOGETHER!
